The Cure
Surely one of the most extraordinary and elaborate tribute albums ever! Caned & Able have selected a handful of lesser known Cure tracks and treated them like their own, but keeping the essence of Robert Smith and co’s unique delivery. The Caned & Able collective, including the guitar wizardry of Jon Klein (Specimen, Siouxsie & the Banshees (Robert Smith himself once deputised as guitarist for the Banshees)) with drummer Chris Bell (Big Country, Gene Loves Jezebel, Spear of Destiny) set out on their second commercial album.
The renditions of these songs are remarkable in their subtlety and complexity – and there’s not a hit single in sight. The songs were chosen for their melodies and lyrical content rather than their commercial success – a truly brave and interesting move by this already unpredictable group of talented musicians.
The ethereal deep waters one finds oneself in when listening to this album swirl around you like multi-layered colours of sound, with Patrick Bird’s delicate and wounded vocals laid bare for all to breathe. Yet again the musicianship excels, as witnessed since their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Smoke…’
A very unexpected and utterly beautiful album to listen to.
Released 29 March 2010, Produced by Patrick Bird.
