Press Release: Caned & Able – launch of single and new album in May 2011
London - 11 April 2011 - PSB Music today announced that Dark Matter, the new album from London-based Caned & Able will be released on CD and download (plus iTunes bonus track) on May 30th. May 9th sees the release of the single, ‘Monkey Song’ (download only). Featuring rapper Big G, the latest addition to the band's eclectic line-up, the new material will be launched at events in London (Ginglik, May 25th) and Big G’s hometown of Northampton (Black Bottom Club, May 26th), and promoted by summer festival appearances currently being lined up at Boomtown, Winterwell, Glastonbury, Hop Farm, Beautiful Days, Secret Garden Party, Big Chill, Shambala, Notting Hill Carnival and Bestival.
“Dark Matter is our step into the big league. A vibrant slab of melodic songs, with some new studio experiments, draped in Caned & Able’s trademark hallucinogenic sheen. It also heralds the explosive arrival of rapper-toaster-singer Big G,” explains producer Patrick Bird. “Big G effortlessly coaxes and cajoles the new material into the realms of self dialogue and crowd-igniting angst.”
The new-look Caned & Able boasts a wide range of talent, with sounds spanning rock and reggae beats. Bass, guitars, strings, synths and beaty percussion combine for Big G to show off his upfront and personal lyrical style. Highlights include Big G’s impassioned plea for tolerance on future single ‘Love And Hate’; ‘Raver’ harking back to early 70s slide guitar-iced rock soul; and the epic end to the album, ‘The Last Chapter’, which starts delicately before dropping to a pulsating ambience, and building back into a complex mini-symphony.
Caned & Able formed out of producers Patrick Bird and Martyn Savigar turning their Beats For Bars mash-up project into an album called Smoke…, the stoner’s fave of 2008, released on the esteemed Malicious Damage label. Dark Matter sees the arrival of performer/producer Raj Vivekananthan. Boosted by his arrival, Caned & Able have also become in demand as mixers and remixers, working with The Verve as well as currently Primal Scream and The Skuzzies.
“Working with Patrick and the rest of the band is a ridiculous amount of fun. beats. Our influences range from The Cure to The Freestylers,” says co-producer Raj Vivekananthan. “We really have created something special for the summer.”
